Do you remember just a few short years ago when someone would show up to the annual office party in what was then considered a tacky or even hideous Christmas sweater? You would spend a few awkward moments trying to determine whether to compliment the individual on their unique taste or make a joke and hope that you were on the same page. These encounters often ended in a quick smile and a retreat to the buffet.
So isn’t it a little hard to believe that the good ole’ Christmas Sweater – festive, ill-fitting, unflattering, and let’s face it, ugly – now has its own day. Alas, it does and today, December 16th, is the day!
If you haven’t already dug up that sweater your Aunt Matilda gave you for Christmas 10 years ago, and you’re looking for something truly special to wear to your neighborhood potluck, try making your own! This is a far better option than shopping for one as your local thrift shops probably sold out a month ago and you’ll pay upwards of $50 at a department store.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Any red, green, blue or white sweater or vest
- Hot glue gun (with plenty of glue sticks)
- Ribbons
- Garland
- Lights (check out this video that shows how to add lights to your Ugly Christmas Sweater)
- Ornaments – make your own snowman, gingerbread man, snowflakes, candy cane, tree or any other Christmas-themed item out of felt; or attach whatever you have lying around (plastic or foam balls, stockings, stuffed animals, etc.).
